Amy Rigby - Middlescence

Review by Shake Dance Center

Middlescence by Amy Rigby is a refreshing album that showcases the artist's witty and insightful songwriting. The album's 12 tracks explore the themes of middle age, relationships, and self-discovery with honesty and humor.

Rigby's vocals are strong and emotive, perfectly capturing the mood of each song. The instrumentation is equally impressive, with a mix of acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, and drums creating a sound that is both rootsy and contemporary.

Highlights of the album include the upbeat and catchy "Tom Petty Karaoke," the introspective "From philly to Memphis," and the poignant "Playing Pittsburgh."

One of the best albums about getting older without getting old. It is about having a past which is rich of memories - yes, and missed chances - but having a future as well - with chances to take and hopefully not miss. It is rich in detail and even if your own details are different hers make the songs authentic and generally applicable. It is the logically successor of the previous album and she takes us along on her trip that is her life, and maybe in part our own. And it makes you wish that you had known all of this when you were younger...Since rock is no longer the music of the youth alone but also the music of those who grew up with it, it is an album to which many can relate and she is a great storyteller for it.Produced by the Car's Elliot Easton who also plays guitar.
