Only True Believers is a remarkable album by the Swedish black metal band Armagedda. It was released in 2003 and features eight tracks of raw and uncompromising black metal. The album is a perfect example of the band's unique sound, which is characterized by its bleak and atmospheric approach to the genre.

The production on Only True Believers is intentionally raw, with a lo-fi sound that adds to the overall atmosphere of the album. The guitars are abrasive and distorted, while the drums are pounding and relentless. The vocals, delivered in a gritty and raspy style, are perfectly suited to the music.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Döpt i en jökelsjö", with its haunting melodies and atmospheric keyboards. Another highlight is "Refuse the Blood of Jesus", which features a driving rhythm and some of the album's most intense vocals.

For a band that existed only in a 4-years span, Armagedda definitely did superior albums to many Norwegian Black Metal bands of the same kind (Gorgoroth, Immortal and even Satyricon). The project was founded two members of other similarly semi-active underground projects and, given its scarce activity, many would be tempted to ignore them. But, seriously, before such idea reaches someone's mind, one should listen to their second album Only True Believers. In theory, the album isn't innovative in any way, but the songwriting is not only varied (both in rhythms and melodic construction), but the members found also the possibility to use B-tuned guitars a la Grave/Entombed, so the album recalls a lot a good chunk of the Old School Death Metal scene, despite being more focused and less urgent.With such a strong production, songs that would seem apparently (and, to an extent, they are) conventional Black/Death Metal songs get a non-ignorable boost that makes them all the more devastating and catchy. Opener "Refuse the Blood of Jesus" is the most distinguishable and strongest of the bunch, while "Poetry from the Poisoned Mind" features slower sections that would make Forgotten Tomb proud: also the last two non-instrumental tracks feature anomalous, slower (some may yell "Doom/Depressive Black Metal") rhythms and paces. The only defect one can find in this album is that, at places, it gets a bit too monochrome and predictable, but the well-thought presence of suspended/diminished lead arpeggios and sudden tempo changes help make the album musical, albeit in a "minimalistic" sense. It may not be uniformly excellent, but it's so consistent and engaging to be a masterpiece. The album includes a concluding unlisted tense outro: the 2010 limited re-issue includes an inedited cut and a Satyricon cover.Highlights: "Refuse the Blood of Jesus", "Poetry from the Poisoned Mind", "Endless Fields of Sorrow".
