Review by Eric Weiner

The Prodigal Son is a classical album that features the works of Benjamin Britten, performed by an impressive lineup of musicians including Pears Drake, Shirley Quirk Tear, and Viola Tunnard. The English Opera Group also plays a prominent role in the album, adding depth and complexity to the already rich soundscapes.

The album is a beautiful and haunting tribute to the story of the prodigal son, with Britten's compositions perfectly capturing the emotional nuances of the parable. The performers bring their own unique interpretations to the pieces, adding layers of meaning and depth to the already powerful music.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "The Prodigal's Return", which features a stunning vocal performance by Pears Drake. The piece builds slowly, with Drake's voice rising and falling in perfect harmony with the music. The result is a haunting and beautiful piece that is sure to leave listeners breathless.

Another highlight of the album is "The Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard", which features a haunting duet between Quirk Tear and Tunnard. The two voices blend together perfectly, creating a truly beautiful and moving piece of music.

About Benjamin Britten, Pears Drake, ShirleyQuirk Tear, English Opera Group, Viola Tunnard

British composer, conductor, and pianist. Born: November 22, 1913, in Lowestoft, UK - died: December 04, 1976, in Aldeburgh, UK. He showed talent from an early age, and first came to public attention with the a cappella choral work A Boy Was Born in 1934. With the premiere of his opera Peter Grimes in 1945, he leapt to international fame. For the next fifteen years he devoted much of his compositional attention to writing operas, establishing him as one of the leading 20th century figures in this genre. Britten's interests as a composer were wide-ranging; he produced important music in such varied genres as orchestral, choral, solo vocal (much of it written for the tenor Peter Pears), chamber and instrumental, as well as film music. He also took a great interest in writing music for children and amateur performers, and was a fine pianist and conductor. One of Britten's most important works, The War Requiem was completed 20 December 1961, and first performed 30 May 1962. Britten received many prizes and honors, including becoming a Companion of Honour in 1952, and a member of the Order of Merit in 1965.
