Indeed, the line about Coltrane sets up Big Youth's roast of Church and State, "too much religion". He says Coltrane was white, yes, but so as to 'blow black people's minds every time', setting them up somehow to be duped by the white man's culture and religion. From the standpoint of a Rastafarian, that makes sense, especially from one who regards someplace like Trenchtown as the 'kingdom of the heaven of the ghetto'. It's a powerful message, and a classic tune, perhaps his best.

@BillLarstead Big Youth took the line from the last poets, as is custom of toasters of the era to use lines and re harmonize them. A love supreme was an album by coltrane of course. He wasnt putting him down he didnt know much about him. On the original cut of jim screechie he said jonh coltrane was white...they took it off when he found it he wasnt

Damn, this cut still kills me having first heard the LP in 78' over at a friends house. Who's the incredible guitarist w/ those jazzy licks? But even to this day, I cringe when Big Youth sings "John Coltrane died in vain for a Love Supreme". I love this track, but that lyric rubs me the wrong way. He doesn't have the credentials or spiritual cache to question someone of John Coltrane's stature. RIP J. C.
