My father brought the album for me around the early 70's ( I still have it)! and I also had memorized the music, one of my favorite military collections.

For those who have expressed an interest in this great Napoleonic era song, here are the actual lyrics in my very poor French (pardonnez-moi, mes amis francais, pour ma francais):

Chant du Retour de la Grande Armee (1808)

by Etienne Nicholas Mehul (22 June 1763 - 18 October 1817

(Choeur)
Les voici! Les Voici! Les Voici!
Reunissez-vous,
Heureuses femmes, tendres meres,
Heureuses femmes, tendres meres,
Ces vainquers, ce sont vos epoux,
Ce sont vos enfants, et vos freres!

Ces vainquers, ce sont vos epoux,
ce sont vos enfants, et vos freres!

Ce sont vos enfants, et vos freres!
Ce sont vos enfants, et vos freres!

Premiere Strophe

(Choeur)
Les voici! Les Voici! Les Voici!
Reunissez-vous,
Heureuses femmes, tendres meres,
Heureuses femmes, tendres meres,
Ces vainquers, ce sont vous epoux,
Ce sont vos enfants, et vos freres!

Ces vainquers, ce sont vos epoux,
ce sont vos enfants, et vos freres!

Ce sont vos enfants, et vos freres!
Ce sont vos enfants, et vos freres!

Troisieme Strophe
A l'avare Anglais rallie,
Cinq fois vainquer en esperance,
Cinq fois le monde soudoye
S'est precipite sur la France.
Surprenant un peuple pervers
Dans sa trame, a lui seul funeste,
Quels vengeurs au-dela des mers,
Joindront a l'ennemi qui nous reste?

(Choeur)

This sounds like a marching song in the Spanish Campaign. My French is lousy - but it seems like they are complaining that now they have to go back there because of the British interfering with the occupation by France. Then it sounds like they are
saying that they rush into Death at the first sounds of combat?

I bought the album about the same time you did.  I love this as well and don't forget "pas' accelere". Vive l'emporer!  Our younger egos and our young confidence clashes with our eventual reality.  Keep the faith ascenbach!  God Bless.

When I bought the marvelous Nonesuch LP back in the early 70s, I played it so often that I memorized the music. This is one of my favorite tracks.

Thank you for posting. This was a big favorite de mon père, who used it to motivate us (and himself) to make dinner.
