Camper Van Beethoven - Telephone Free Landslide Victory

labpessoal

Review by Anselmo Lima

Telephone Free Landslide Victory is an impressive debut album by the American rock band Camper Van Beethoven. The album was released in 1985 and showcases the band's unique sound that blends elements of punk rock, folk, and psychedelic rock.

The album opens with "Border Ska," an upbeat ska-infused track that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The band's use of unconventional instruments, such as the violin and accordion, adds an interesting layer to their sound. Songs like "The Day That Lassie Went to the Moon" and "Take the Skinheads Bowling" showcase the band's quirky sense of humor and lyricism.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Sad Lovers Waltz," a melancholic ballad that showcases the band's ability to craft emotionally resonant songs. The album closes with "Club Med Sucks," a humorous critique of the vacation resort.

Notes

  • From Independent Project Records founder Bruce Licher: "...we printed up 1200 copies of Telephone Free Landslide Victory in 1985, and it just took off. I did a second edition with a hand printed cover, and it got to the point where I couldn't keep up with it, so we licensed it to Rough Trade."
  • This entry is for the second IPR pressing, pre-Rough Trade license.
  • Printed letterpress on chipboard, the color scheme for this pressing is green, florescent orange, and black over opaque white. Differentiating this pressing from the first, the lower right-hand corner of the back cover includes: "Second Edition: 1175 cp. / September 1985" which is machine numbered beneath.
  • The inner sleeve is printed letterpress in florescent orange, metallic silver, and black inks on a generic white paper sleeve. Disc labels are also printed by letterpress on kraft paper in opaque white, metallic silver, red, and black.
  • The original poly sleeves include a (green) adhesive label with the blurb about CVB.
  • Some discs may include two inserts; a current IPR releases and a mail-in form to receive more about IPR.
  • Images of these inserts are part of the Discogs entry for the first pressing.
  • Track 9 is a previously unreleased studio outtake.
  • Tracks 10-14 originally released on the Take The Skinheads Bowling EP.
  • Track 25 is a hidden track and not listed on the sleeve.
  • Copies like this are not Dolby encoded, Info card has no barcode.
  • Manufactured and Distributed within the United States of America by Rough Trade, Incorporated for Independent Project Records.
  • Included inner credit sheet.
  • Rough Trade reissue similar to Camper Van Beethoven - Telephone Free Landslide Victory, with alternate peach colored cover art, and without the number 27631 etched in the runout.
  • Letter pressed cover and inner sleeve. Comes with four inserts. Cover has letterpressed copy: "PROMOTIONAL OR COMPLIMENTARY COPY. Independent Project Records does not pretend to claim ownership of this record once it has been distributed."
  • Promo edition limited to 300 copies.
  • 3,000 copies pressed.
  • ℗ & © 1985 Camper Van Beethoven Music Co.
  • No SID Codes
  • Engineered Jan and Feb 1985.
  • Mastered May 1985.
  • Comes with printed 1-sided inner sleeve.
  • Test Pressing on black vinyl. No sleeve, Glued on track listing on top of generic pressing plant labels. Description of band glued to plain white sleeve.
  • Engineered at Sámurai Sound, Davis, CA, USA, Jan and Feb 1985.
  • Mastered at KDisc, Hollywood, CA, USA, May 1985.
  • Issued under license from Independent Project Records.
  • One-sided insert - insert gives credits, and lists former members of CVB. The credit notes say that the writing credit given for B7 (to Chris Molla, David Lowery and Diane Dublin) is incorrect and the song should just be credited to Molla and Lowery. This may of course be a joke! so I have not amended the writing credit.
  • The insert artwork is a pen and ink style sketch of skeleton cowboys in a desert setting signed by Silverstein.
  • Numbered edition of 1250 copies. Chipboard cover, and white paper inner-sleeve printed letterpress by Bruce Licher at IPR.
  • Back cover reads "First edition: June 1985.".
  • Covers printed in five color variations (see promo copy insert).
  • Complete copies would include two inserts, one of which was a registration form, numbered to correspond with the machine numbered cover. A clever, and charming attempt at demographic data collection, and list building.
  • Track 24 contains a hidden track which starts 30 seconds after the end of the listed track.
  • Different re-release pressing. Issued in a standard jewel case with fold-out insert.
  • Track 24 (total duration: 6:23) contains a hidden track (track 24.3). Track 24.1 lasts for 2:26 before a period of silence.
  • This compilation ℗2004 Camper Van Beethoven under exclusive license to Cooking Vinyl ©2004 Cooking Vinyl
  • Made in the UK
  • Tracks 10 to 14 originally released on the Take The Skinheads Bowling EP.
  • Made in Greece by EMI.
  • Comes with (2-colour) insert, printed on one side only.

California avant-garde/post-punk/country outfit that formed while the members were students at the University of California at Santa Cruz. This university consists of several "colleges," each with a different style of living facility and academic focus. College V (which was later renamed Porter College) has always been the home to the more artistic/"weird"/misfit students; the band Camper Van Beethoven was named by the members to match the initials of the College V B-dorm (C.V.B.).

One of the most eclectic records you will ever hear. Fun but intelligent, with well-written, timeless songs.

I agtree those are great opening lines! Funny, but I had the cassette and I always heard them as "Every day, I get up and pray to John/And he increase the number of clouds by exactly one" - and I like that even better!
