Review by Mats Adamczak

Charles McPherson, the self-titled album by the renowned saxophonist, is a masterpiece of modern jazz. The album features McPherson's virtuosic saxophone playing, backed by a stellar rhythm section consisting of pianist Barry Harris, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Leroy Williams.

From the opening track, "Con Alma," McPherson's saxophone sings with a soulful, bluesy tone, showcasing his mastery of the instrument. The rhythm section provides a swinging, propulsive groove that propels the music forward with energy and enthusiasm.

Throughout the album, McPherson's playing is consistently impressive, demonstrating his technical prowess and his ability to convey emotion through his music. The ballad "I Should Care" is a particular standout, with McPherson's saxophone soaring over a lush, romantic arrangement.

The album also features several original compositions by McPherson, including the uptempo "Blue 'n' Boogie" and the bluesy "Charlesology." These songs highlight McPherson's skills as a composer and arranger, as well as his ability to lead a band with confidence and creativity.
