About Cradle Of Filth
A dark/extreme metal band from Suffolk, UK.
Cradle of Filth was founded in 1991 as part of the second wave black metal genre, but since then band's musical style has evolved into a unique mixture of death, black, gothic and symphonic metal with lyrics and general imagery being heavily influenced by Gothic literature, poetry, mythology and horror films. The exact sub-genre they play in has been somewhat difficult to classify and is often a subject of debate.
The band has gone through several line-up changes throughout the years and as of 2014 frontman Dani Filth is the only remaining founding member, as well as the only member to stay in the band since its inception.
Current line-up:
Dani Filth (Daniel Lloyd Davey) - Vocals (1991 )
Marthus (Martin Škaroupka) Drums, keyboards and orchestrations (2006 )
Daniel Firth Bass (2012 )
Richard Shaw - Guitar (2014 )
Ashok (Marek Šmerda) Guitar (2014 )
Anabelle Iratni - Keyboard, vocals (2021 )

Damnation and a Day, for many, signals the beginning of Cradle of Filth's artistic decline: honestly, we find this degeneration only on Dani Filth's vocals, which here are more strained and have lost most of their banshee shrill of old. For the rest, the band goes in full gear with up-lifting blasting sections, funky breakdowns, cheesy female choirs and careful riffing, despite the schizophrenic song structure (but we've said many times before that Cradle of Filth are a Progressive Metal band without knowing it). The string arrangements, the themes and the lyrics goes amok more than once in every single song of this album, like a carnivalesque festival that menaces to go on forever. What hasn't changed is the band's triumphant songwriting: all the members (Filth included) contributed on creating songs that incorporate a kaleidoscope of melodies in every single minute and are uniformly terrific. The music follows the structure of the lyrics, and that makes the album impeccable both in rhythmic and melodic structure, something most bands of the genre would have trouble with: interrupted verses, sudden rhythmic drops, mastery of words and syllables. everything is exactly at its right place, and even the production is many times better and more listenable than the band's last album Midian: as it wasn't enough, most of the songs continue and coalesce with three intros, making the album 8-minutes longer than it actually is (a good 76 minutes, boy!). Also, Paul Allender (who had returned in the band's line-up since Midian) employed Drop C tuning here, expanding the band's musical span and creating a lot of hammering and elaborated riffs all the while. Thanks to the production work and to a weathering songwriting process (no less than 12 songs, most clocking over 5 minutes), Damnation and a Day turns out as an authentic challenge. In theory, the album should turn out indigestible and impossible to be listened in a single sit: fortunately, Cradle of Filth are such talented as songwriters, arrangers and at choosing the perfect sounds for their albums, that this one comes out uniformly terrific, if not excellent. From the pseudo-Arabic citations on "Doberman Pharaoh, or Destiny Wore a Bondage Mask" to the hammering D-beat fest of "Presents from the Poison-Hearted", from the stunning "Hurt and Virtue" to the silly, ear-spinning single "Babalon A.D. (So Glad for the Madness)", the album doesn't offer a single weak point, as the songs are uniformly strong and empowering (although some are better as others, the quality is uniformly high). With such a projectile in their pocket, Cradle of Filth could go sure in any place they wanted to.Highlights: "Hurt and Virtue", "Carrion", "Babalon A.D. (So Glad for the Madness)", "Thank God for the Suffering", "The Smoke of Her Burning".
