Emancipator - Soon It Will Be Cold Enough

Though laid back and pretty at first listen, this album could also easily be the score of a seriously distressing thriller, something like The Shining. This music has a lot of eerie, spooky undercurrents, like a very, very deep lake. And though the music initially comes across as a digitally produced album, the music slowly reveals a lot of analogue instruments as well. Especially the violin, played by Cindy Kao, has a prominent place on this album, playing countless short, melodic hooks. The opener 'Lionheart', with its fairy tale-like piano intro, lures you into the album. The listener immediately gets enchanted. 'Wolf drawn' is a gentle track with an imaginative drum part. It borrows just a small dose of sounds from the haunted house, but this creates the right amount of unease for a fascinating listen. 'When I go' is deliberately sung off-key by Thao Nguyen. Emancipator gives her vocals a detached quality in the mix, preventing the off-key delivery from becoming a gimmick. As everything here, the music sounds relaxed at first listen. But creeps and monsters hide underneath this shine, as Nguyen sings 'When he rode to her house, In the dead of the winter'. You just know that nothing good can be expected from his arrival.'Darkest evening of the year' most explicitly evokes the spookiness of this album. No polish here to hide the suspense. The heavily distorted guitar somehow manages to play a slow melody, as the track conjures images of desolated places. Then, we enter a more relaxing part of the album. 'Eve' still starts with a troubled intro, as an echo of the night that has just passed. But then you hear the soothing violin over a slowly building drum 'n bass beat, to remind you just how accomplished this music really is. On 'Smoke signals' and 'Periscope Up', the dark undercurrent is absent, as the birds and the wind chimes make clear. But then there are clouds in the sky again, as the brilliant 'First snow' brings back the ghosts, with dark, distorted samples. In the dying seconds of the song, a defeated voice states that 'It's cold. Real cold.' Unsettling. 'Good knight' and 'Soon it will be cold enough to build fires' bear samples of the vocals of Thao Nguyen from 'When I go'. Her cut up vocals give these tracks an otherworldly quality, and lifts them to a higher level. Finally, on 'Anthem' the music shines like a bright day, with a clear melody. But of course some rain starts to fall halfway, yet again expressing the split personality of this album. The song just fades away, as an elegant end of the album. Dreamy and flirty on one hand and dark and scary on the other, this album bears so much contradictions, it can't be pigeonholed. A unique musical trip through the dark woods in mid-winter, this album is a gift that keeps giving. On top of that, the sequencing of the songs seem to tell a story, or at least seem to orchestrate the spell Emancipator puts on you. Not bad for a teenager.

Thos ised to be the dismissal bell at my high school. My friend and I tried so hard to find it, and I finally discovered it by pure accident and was ELATED. It's still one of my favorite winter songs

I first listened to this in my senior year in high school ... It was a tough year mentally ... Now I'm a college senior and I remember this , it's weird how years pass by so fast

This is the first time I've listened to this song since 2012, when I was in high school. I would put it on and get a brief moment of contentment with life despite the overwhelming depression I felt. Ten years later, I'm the happiest I've felt in my life and I'm getting married soon. Life gets better.

It's cold autumn, I'm smoking a joint outside and looking at the sidewalk, song feels good in my heart.
