The Grateful Dead - Red Rocks 7878

Review by John Daugherty

The album Red Rocks 7878 by Grateful Dead is a must-have for any fan of the band or classic rock music in general. This live album captures the band's performance at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado on August 7 and 8, 1978. The sound quality is exceptional, and the energy of the crowd and the band is palpable.

The album features a mix of classic Grateful Dead songs like "Jack Straw" and "Friend of the Devil" as well as some lesser-known tracks like "Passenger" and "Estimated Prophet". The band's improvisational skills are on full display, as they stretch out the songs and explore new musical territory.

One standout moment on the album is the 25-minute version of "Terrapin Station", which features some stunning guitar work from Jerry Garcia and a beautiful vocal performance from Donna Jean Godchaux. The band also throws in a few covers, including a funky rendition of "Good Lovin'" and a bluesy take on "Spoonful".

Must Hear Wharf Rat. Jerry's opening notes here are something special, Dark Star-esque I've always thought. And followed by Franklin's? As good as you'd think it should be.Estimated > Other One > Eyes is as thrilling as it looks on paper, and Jerry's solo in Estimated is, well, his best Estimated solo ever, though I suppose that's up for argument (you can argue, but you'd be wrong).Truth be told, this release sounds no better than the crispy sbd I was lucky to have, but I'm very pleased this is now an official release.
