Guided By Voices - Motivational Jumpsuit

Motivational Jumpsuit, the latest album from Guided By Voices, is a high-energy, upbeat collection of songs that showcases the band's trademark blend of lo-fi indie rock and catchy pop melodies. From the driving opener "Littlest League Possible" to the anthemic closer "Alex and the Omegas," the album is filled with memorable hooks and infectious choruses that are sure to get stuck in your head.
The band's signature sound is on full display throughout the album, with buzzing guitars, propulsive drumming, and frontman Robert Pollard's distinctive vocals all contributing to the overall vibe. But there are also some surprising twists and turns, such as the jazzy interlude on "Jupiter Spin" and the dreamy, almost psychedelic soundscapes of "Save the Company."

Far and away the most pleasing of the 6 LPs during the Staggering Reunion, Motivational Jumpsuit gets a slight bump up of a quarter point, yet remains just short of essential due to one of the worst sets of Toby songs in ages. The opener is an underrated gem that succeeds simply because it's kept short. In fact, the whole album benefits from a rough approach to recording and keeping to shorter songs. Writer's Bloc offers a heavy version of the quirk we love from Bob, and Child Activist is another near classic to start the album strong before hitting the first masterpiece in Planet Score. Save the Company also attains instant classic status, and Toby's lone good contribution to this one, Record Level Love, follows. I Am Columbus is a Stooges style raver that precedes a 2 song lag (the awful Toby track, Calling Up Washington, is grating and unforgivable). Zero Elasticity stomps with the best and Bird With No Name is the sort of quiet contemplation we prefer from Bob. Another truly terrible Toby track precedes the magnificent Vote For Me Dummy, a cool SOUNDING Toby track follows, and then Bob coughs up a couple of stinkers before the sublime Alex and the Omegas (yet another epic album closer form the master of the form). It may not quite evoke the golden age of King Shit, but this is about as close as he comes these days outside of some of his side projects (most notably the Circus Devils). If only we had been given the tight 11-13 track album we deserved, the reunion would have been complete.

I had an extra $316.73 that I would have loved dearly to leave on top of this table. Instead, I gave it to the two best amateur basketball players this side of the Dayton main street. You won't know when, you won't know where, but they will make your rec center team look like a bitch.
