Gunnar Geertsen - Grantræet

Review by Aaron Reisman

Grantræet, the latest album by Gunnar Geertsen, is an impressive blend of traditional Norwegian folk music and contemporary jazz. The album features Geertsen's virtuosic piano playing, backed by a talented group of musicians who bring the music to life.

The album is named after the Norwegian word for "tree," and the music reflects this theme with its earthy, organic sound. The opening track, "Vinteren," sets the tone with its haunting melody and sparse instrumentation. From there, the album takes the listener on a journey through a variety of moods and textures, from the buoyant "Solskinn" to the introspective "Regn."

One of the standout tracks is "Skogen," which features Geertsen's piano weaving in and out of a lush, swirling arrangement of strings and woodwinds. The result is a hypnotic, otherworldly sound that transports the listener to a mystical forest.
