Review by ilangovan ramasamy

Monday Night at Birdland is a classic jazz album featuring the talents of Hank Mobley, Billy Root, Curtis Fuller, and Lee Morgan. The album was recorded live at the legendary Birdland club in New York City in 1957 and captures the energy and excitement of a live jazz performance.

The album features six tracks, all of which showcase the virtuosity and improvisational skills of the musicians. The opening track, "Split Feelin's," sets the tone for the album with its catchy melody and lively rhythms. Other standout tracks include "The Midget," a bluesy tune with a memorable trumpet solo by Morgan, and "The Breakdown," a fast-paced number with impressive solos by all four musicians.

Throughout the album, Mobley's saxophone playing is a standout, and he is well-supported by Root on tenor sax, Fuller on trombone, and Morgan on trumpet. The rhythm section of pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor also deserves praise for their tight and dynamic playing.

Billy Root was born in Philly, to a musical family. Ray & Tommy, were from the famous Bryant Family of musicians, in Philly. In fact this is a Philly band playing in New York's Birdland. Philly is well documented for its contribution to our music, and it is still going strong in 2018.

This was absolutely the best of the best Jazz- music there ever was! No two ways about it! America, what has happened to your incredible inventive Jazz music? And what has happened to your society? You’ve become a (very dangerous) joke among civilised counties with you’re violent gun-society. Is that what you really want? I feel saddened what you’ve become.

Thanks for posting! For me, this is a very rare recording, but I love hard bop music and it led me here. Just wonderful and passionate music from brilliant players. (And I never heard of Billy Root).

Curtis Fuller was from Detroit and Hank Mobley was from Georgia but lived for a while in Philly up until his passing but the rest of the band are Philly born and bred guys and they are part of the reason that I am proud of my home town, Philadelphia, PA. Yeah!!!
