Comments
The song was not considered single-worthy by the record label. However, when Croce was killed in a plane crash in September of 1973, the song got a lot of airplay. The themes of mortality and wanting to save and appreciate as much time as possible resonated with people. With increased airplay, the label released it as a single and it went to #1 on December 29, 1973...giving Croce his second #1 song of his career (“Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” was the first.)
