Smiles by Jo Jones is an album that showcases the legendary drummer's skills in a variety of settings. The album features Jones playing with a number of different musicians, including pianist Hank Jones, bassist Ray Brown, and saxophonist Zoot Sims.
The album opens with the swinging "Shoe Shine Boy," which features Jones and Brown laying down a solid groove while Sims takes a lyrical solo. Other highlights include the bluesy "Blues for Jo," the funky "Jive at Five," and the Latin-tinged "Mambo Jones."
Throughout the album, Jones proves himself to be a master of his craft. His playing is crisp, precise, and full of energy, and he effortlessly drives the various ensembles forward. The other musicians on the album are equally impressive, and their interplay with Jones is a joy to listen to.
