John Coltrane - Settin The Pace

Review by Patricia Darch

John Coltrane's album "Settin The Pace" is a masterpiece that showcases his virtuosity on the saxophone. The album features four tracks, each of which is a testament to Coltrane's musical genius. The opening track, "I See Your Face Before Me," is a slow and soulful ballad that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Coltrane's saxophone playing is smooth and melodic, and he effortlessly weaves in and out of the song's melody.

The second track, "If There Is Someone Lovelier Than You," picks up the pace a bit and features some impressive improvisation from Coltrane. The song's upbeat tempo and catchy melody make it a standout track on the album. The third track, "Little Melonae," is a fast-paced tune that showcases Coltrane's technical prowess on the saxophone. His lightning-fast runs and intricate phrasing are nothing short of breathtaking.

The album closes with "Rise 'N' Shine," a lively and upbeat tune that leaves the listener feeling energized and invigorated. Coltrane's saxophone playing is once again top-notch, and the song's catchy melody is sure to stick in the listener's head long after the album has ended.

This recording contains examples of Coltrane's "sheets of sound"(SOS) improvisational approach, as coined by critic Ira Gitler. There are also more lyrical solos on the slower paced features, Examples of Trane's SOS improv include Jackie McLean's "Lil Melonae". It seems like he is "connecting the dots" - performing amazingly fast and furious lines, where he uses some blurring arpeggios with glissando touches. These, along with other "lightning bolts", sound out as very unconventional ways to get between the chordal guide tones and some variations on the melody. His precision and interval leaps remind me why he has become a musical icon. An incredible recording, with a multitude of solo approaches (including lyrical and sheets-of-sound, sometimes mixed). The extra blues track on the CD is a great example of his versatility. Perhaps this was not included on the original LP due to it's length, simple head and blues chordal jam-like structure. There are also some lesser-known standards among the 5 tracks on this recording. These are quite refreshing compared to standards that have been overplayed and become "ear worms" over time. This CD is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I think this performance, along with "If There Is Lovelier Than You" and "I See Your face Before Me" and a couple of others, was on a Prestige record called "Trane's Reign," because I have the vinyl from 50 years ago. One of my first serious jazz recordings from "Save-on-Jazz," a mail-order outfit where I also got Eric Dolphy's record with Ron Carter on cello... "Status Seeking." Jeez, I'm old.
