Review by Juan Antonio Cobo

The album Piano Concerto No 1 No 2 by Liszt, performed by Leonard Pennario, René Leibowitz, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, is a must-listen for classical music enthusiasts. The album features two of Liszt's most popular piano concertos, showcasing the virtuosity of the composer and the performers.

Pennario's skillful playing of the piano is evident throughout the album, particularly in the first concerto's opening movement, where he displays his technical prowess and sensitivity. René Leibowitz's conducting of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is also noteworthy, as he brings out the richness and depth of the music.

The album's sound quality is excellent, with the piano and orchestra balanced perfectly. The listener can hear every nuance of the music, from the delicate piano passages to the powerful orchestral sections.

  • The Orchestra is credited to be The Royal Philharmonic with an original release date of 1963.
  • The same pianist and conductor recorded these works in 1963 with The London Symphony Orchestra.
  • It seems likely that The London Symphony Orchestra should be credited on this release too rather than The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (see Submission Notes for further information)..

Born: October 22, 1811, Doborján, Austria-Hungary (present-day Raiding, Austria). Died: July 31, 1886, Bayreuth, Germany. Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, music teacher, arranger, organist, philanthropist, author, nationalist and a Franciscan tertiary. He was a renowned performer throughout Europe, noted especially for his showmanship and great skill with the piano. To this day, he is considered by some to have been the greatest pianist in history. Liszt's musical invention went into territories which were then almost unexplored, in particular as regards harmonic research, as emerges from the late piano works, which led him to anticipate fragments of harmonies from the early twentieth century. His preference for program music is testified by the numerous symphonic poems he composed. Father-in-law to .
