About Luciano Chessa
Born 1971 in Sassari, Italy, Luciano Chessa studied in Bologna, Italy, where he got a D.M.A. in Piano performance and a M.A. in Composition from the G.B. Martini Conservatory of Music, and a M.A. magna cum laude in History of Medieval Music. During those years, he promoted music concerts and lectures of composers ranging from garage rock group Gli Avvoltoi to Sylvano Bussotti and Malcolm Goldstein, and recorded the tracks who went to form his first LP "Humus" released in 1997 by Italian cult label Destination X (and voted by Rockerillas critics as one of the 10 best international recordings of that year). Alternate takes and other home recordings from that era were later collected in the "Peyrano" cd, reissued in March 2012 by the Swiss label Skank Bloc Records.
He then moved to California, where he got a Ph.D. in Musicology and Music Criticism from the University of California at Davis, and from 1999 to 2004 he has been a member of the UC Davis Gospel Choir, where he served as assistant conductor to Calvin Lymos, the choir's principal director.
As a composer, conductor, pianist, and musical saw / Vietnamese dan bau soloist, Luciano Chessa has been active in Europe, the U.S., and Australia. Compositions include "Variazioni su un oggetto di scena" ( 2002), for piano and stuffed toys, a piano and percussion duet after Pier Paolo Pasolinis "Petrolio
