Mango Groove - Mango Groove

Review by Mirosława MIRA Hordynska

Mango Groove, the self-titled album by the South African band, is a delightful blend of African rhythms, pop, and jazz. Released in 1989, the album features a range of upbeat and lively tracks that make it impossible not to dance along. The band, led by vocalist Claire Johnston, has a distinct sound that is both infectious and uplifting.

The album opens with "Marabi Party," a track that sets the tone for the rest of the album with its catchy melody and lively rhythm. It's followed by "Special Star," the band's biggest hit, which features a memorable chorus and an irresistible beat. Other standout tracks include "Island Boy," a playful tune with a reggae-inspired rhythm, and "Moments Away," a more mellow and soulful track that showcases Johnston's powerful vocals.

One of the strengths of Mango Groove is the band's ability to blend different styles and genres seamlessly. The album features elements of African music, pop, jazz, and even a touch of Latin music on the track "Another Country." However, the band never loses its unique sound, and every track feels like a cohesive part of the album.

About Mango Groove

Hugely popular South African multiracial afro-pop crossover band, founded around 1983 and still active, albeit with a reduced and changed membership. At their peak they could boast some eleven members. Mango Groove's career has spanned an exciting and turbulent time in South Africas history. Since its first iconic multi-platinum release in 1989, the band, together with its charismatic lead singer Claire Johnston, has gone on to become a household name in South Africa. Mango Groove has a special place in the hearts of South Africans, and in terms of its airplay across all radio and TV stations, continues to be an act that truly reaches everyone, young and old. Many people have tried to define the Mango Groove sound, and have resorted to a host of adjectives and phrases to do this: Kwela/Marabi Pop, SA Pop, Big Band Swing Pop, Eclecto-Pop, and so on. Certainly, the Mango Sound is a pop sound, aiming at simple and accessible songs, grooves and melodies and certainly it is eclectic. This eclecticism is primarily reflected in the extent to which Mango Groove has drawn on the rich legacy of South African urban music forms from the 40s and 50s.
