The Manhattan Transfer - Bodies And Souls

moklox1

Review by Laura Mulholland

Bodies And Souls, the 1983 album by Manhattan Transfer, is a true masterpiece of vocal jazz. The album features the signature tight harmonies and intricate arrangements that the group is known for, but also showcases a more soulful and R&B-influenced sound.

The album's opening track, "Spice of Life," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its funky groove and catchy chorus. Other standout tracks include the sultry ballad "Mystery," the upbeat and danceable "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone," and the hauntingly beautiful "The Night That Monk Returned to Heaven."

Throughout the album, the vocal performances are top-notch, with each member of the group shining in their own right. The arrangements are also expertly crafted, with a variety of musical styles and influences woven seamlessly together.

Rod Temperton, Prince, Smokey Robinson, Burt Bacharach, Stevie Wonder....!!! Old school will always rule.

Bodies and Souls is the slick slice of the 80s that you didn't even know you needed. Each highly produced track strives for that next pop hit. Exceptionally notable is the funky Spice of Life with Stevie Wonder on the harmonica, Why Not, and the sultry Mystery. Surprisingly the one weak track is American Pop; on an album trying to produce that next pop hit. Down South Camp Meetin' is the track that brings them back where their voices soar.

A lot of people don't know this is the original version of this song and Anita Baker covered this. I had the album, so when Anita covered it, I knew it was not the original.

this is the real one. anita performed karaoke. Its the EXACT song, with EXACT matching music, just a changed lead. thats karaoke, not a cover. Its what I make for singers... Karaoke tracks. there is a difference between a cover and a karaoke effort mimicking EVERY single adlib the original singer did. that shows a lack of talent... period.
