Clean tone from McLean and a well crafted melody from Tyner.

Beautiful

Dianne Reeeves’s stellar reading of Cahn’s lyric and McCoy’s sublime melody is a treasure and does justice to the mastery of this chestnut. A piano titan has fallen, may he rest in power.

Allow me to reminisce for a brief moment, and to remember that I had the opportunity to meet McCoy Tyner, and to chat with him over a drink at a West Village Cafe in downtown New York City, in the early 1990s. My date that evening, was an up-and-coming jazz and blues singer, who was on speaking terms with the great McCoy, and she had made the introduction, so that we did get to talk a bit about jazz. I distinctly remember saying to the illustrious jazz pianist that "You Taught My Heart To Sing," had become one of my favorite jazz standards by that time, and the maestro seemed genuinely pleased to hear this. He laughed, in fact, and told my date and I about how this "older Jewish lyricist" ( none other than the Immortal Sammy Kahn) had written some lyrics for the piece, which lucky for us, we have come to know and love. Remembering Sammy Khan, McCoy told us that Sammy would pound out a verse or so, about once a week, and he'd ask the lyricist, "Well, when you gonna finish already?" But Sammy Khan wouldn't bow to such pressure, the maestro told us. In fact, the melody, harmonies and lyrics of this song are masterful. It will live and charm listeners for decades to come, I am sure. McCory Tyner passed away just the other day, on March 6, 2020, at the age of 81, I learned on the radio while driving home. I am lucky - we are so fortunate to have had a giant of jazz piano among us, whose career spanned the decades and included such other greats as John Coltrane. I can only add that the Angels above are really in for a great treat now that McCoy Tyner is amongst them, ready to tickle the ivories with his sublime jazz musicianship.
