Mika Todd - Mika

Review by Diana Fruechtemeyer

Mika Todd, a former member of the Japanese pop group, Morning Musume, has released her latest album, simply titled Mika. The album features a mix of J-pop, electronic dance music, and ballads, showcasing Todd's versatile vocal range and musical style.

The opening track, "Wagamama," sets the tone for the album with its upbeat tempo and catchy chorus. "Let It Go" and "Liar" follow suit with their dance-pop beats and playful lyrics. The album takes a more sentimental turn with the ballads "Kimi ga Inai" and "Kanashimi no Mukou e," where Todd's vocals shine with their emotional depth.

The album's standout track is "Love Is Ecstasy," a sultry and seductive song that showcases Todd's sensual side. The electronic beats and haunting vocals make it a must-listen for fans of EDM.

Notes

  • Recorded at Superb Records Studio Los Angeles, April 18 and April 23, 2005.
  • The Look of Love is a cover song, released in 1967 and originally sung by English pop singer Dusty Springfield. Killing Me Softly is also a cover song, released in 1973 by Roberta Flack.
  • Moody’s Mood for Love is a cover of James Moody’s song of the same name. It was originally released in 1952.
  • At Last is a cover song, released in 1960 and originally sung by Etta James.
  • Pick Yourself Up was written for the film Swing Time , where it was introduced by Fred Astaire and Ginger Roger
  • Liner notes: This is Mika's first American release, featuring standards and one original composition, arranged by her jazz pianist father, Johnny Todd. Mika gained her show business start following her appearance in a talent contest sponsored by Sony Music in her native Hawaii. She was selected to be a member of a vocal group formed in Hawaii and picked up by the Sony Music label for record releases in Japan. She subsequently became a member, and later the leader, of the four girl vocal group, Mini Moni, whose first single release monopolized the charts in Japan for four weeks.
  • This and later recordings placed the group firmly at the top of the popular music scene in Japan. The groups likeness was spun off into multi faceted images featured on products ranging from food to pajamas, umbrellas to toys and comic books. A cartoon series on TV consolidated the group's members as bona fide "idols" to a generation of young Japanese fans.
  • Following Mika's decision to further her career back in the USA, the group made it's final appearance in Japan at Saitama Super Arena in front of 20,000 enthusiastic and emotional fans.
  • Many of these same fans will probably be surprised at the maturity of Mika's treatment of the material here, but those who are aware of her long time interest in the American pop and jazz scene will know that this is an entirely natural evolution.

About Mika Todd

Mika Taressa Todd (Japanese: ß«û¿ìõûÈÃÉ) is a singer. She joined Hello! Project in 1999 as part of the group Coconuts Musume. After Lehua left after the fifth single, Coconuts Musume continued with just Ayaka and Todd. Although they never released another single, the duo performed at Hello! Project concerts, appeared on television shows, hosted their own radio show, Kiss the Coconuts, and even promoted Dole pineapples. Shortly after Coconuts Musume was created, Morning Musume member Yaguchi Mari created the sub-group Minimoni with Kago Ai and Tsuji Nozomi. Tsunku added Todd into group shortly thereafter. Minimoni was a highly popular group at the time and gave Todd more exposure than Coconuts Musume received. In early 2004 it was announced that Todd would be graduating from Coconuts Musume, Minimoni and Hello! Project. She planned to study singing in California and pursue her career as a jazz singer.
