Neck - Psycho Ceilidh

Review by Adam Weart

Neck's latest album, Psycho Ceilidh, is a thrilling and eclectic mix of punk, folk and Celtic influences. The band's signature sound is evident throughout the album, but they have also ventured into new territories and experimented with different styles.

The album opens with "Everybody's Welcome to the Hooley!", a lively and upbeat track that sets the tone for the rest of the album. From there, the listener is taken on a wild and unpredictable ride through a variety of musical styles and moods. "I'm So Thirsty" is a dark and brooding ballad, while "The Blackbird" is a fast-paced, foot-stomping tune that will get even the most reserved listener up and dancing.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "The Streets of London", a cover of the classic folk song made famous by Ralph McTell. Neck's version is a powerful and emotional rendition that showcases the band's ability to take a well-known song and make it their own.

With their backgrounds in Traditional Irish music, Shane MacGowan's Popes & the legendary London Punk scene, this London-Irish 6-piece's fine pedigree has led to them blending a now world-renowned brew of uplifting Irish swirl & ballsy Punk swagger. Throw-in typical London inclusiveness & Clash-inspired social awareness & the result is their Anti-racism anthem 'Everybody's welcome to The Hooley!' hitting the UK charts. They've also released three albums - their seminal 2nd, Sod em & Begorrah!, being rated variously 2nd and 3rd -best Celtic Punk album of all time, & their kick-arse, high-energy live show & extensive touring has made them firm festival favourites (Glastonbury six times!) across three continents - from Moscow to Texas & all points in-between! Thus they've, deservedly, gained recognition as one of the leading bands of the Celtic/Folk Punk scene, famous fans (Johnny Depp!), a movie appearance, musical collaborations, & the respect of their U.S. contemporaries. Neck are, simply, the real deal. Sin é. Anti-racist lyrics and a Reel halfway through exemplify Necks riotous sound, as if The Clash were born on the Emerald Isle! The Irish Post "Manic psycho-ceilídh from the London-Irish heirs to the Pogues' legacy. ¬ for the fainthearted, this is incendiary, belligerent stuff" Hot Press, Ireland
