Ophis - Abhorrence In Opulence

Review by Armando Rapchan

The album "Abhorrence In Opulence" by Ophis is a dark and brooding masterpiece. The band's signature sound of slow, crushing doom metal is present throughout the entire album, with each track delivering a heavy dose of despair and agony.

The production quality on this album is top-notch, with every instrument and vocal track sounding crisp and clear. The guitars are particularly impressive, with a thick and chunky tone that perfectly complements the slow and deliberate drumming.

The lyrics on "Abhorrence In Opulence" are equally impressive, with each track exploring themes of death, decay, and the futility of existence. The vocals are delivered with a sense of raw emotion that perfectly captures the bleakness of the lyrics.

German band Ophis make C#-tuned old-style Doom Metal in the vein of Saturnus, Mourning Beloveth, The Slow Death and My Dying Bride without the presence of sophisticated instrumentation or external elements: their sound is pure, slow and funereally simple. The band's third album, Abhorrence in Opulence, follows other two, 2007's Streams of Misery and Withered Shades. Like those albums, the band opens the dances with the slow 15-minutes mammoth "Disquisition of the Burning". As usual, the album is prolix, long and very repetitive, but since the band doesn't attempt to fix what isn't broken, it can go well for fans of the niche.Highlights: "Among the Falling Stones", "Resurrectum".
