German band Ophis make C#-tuned old-style Doom Metal in the vein of Saturnus, Mourning Beloveth, The Slow Death and My Dying Bride without the presence of sophisticated instrumentation or external elements: their sound is pure, slow and funereally simple. The band's third album, Abhorrence in Opulence, follows other two, 2007's Streams of Misery and Withered Shades. Like those albums, the band opens the dances with the slow 15-minutes mammoth "Disquisition of the Burning". As usual, the album is prolix, long and very repetitive, but since the band doesn't attempt to fix what isn't broken, it can go well for fans of the niche.Highlights: "Among the Falling Stones", "Resurrectum".
