Futile, the sixth studio album by progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, is a captivating and darkly atmospheric masterpiece. The album blends the band's signature sound of intricate guitar work, haunting melodies, and complex rhythms with a more experimental and electronic edge.
The opening track, "What Have We Sown?", sets the tone for the rest of the album with its haunting piano and atmospheric soundscapes. The album's centerpiece, "Radioactive Toy," is a sprawling epic that showcases the band's mastery of dynamics and their ability to create a sense of tension and release.
Other standout tracks include "Nine Cats," a melancholic ballad that features beautiful acoustic guitar work and the hauntingly beautiful vocals of frontman Steven Wilson, and "It Will Rain for a Million Years," a dark and brooding instrumental that builds to a powerful climax.

About Porcupine Tree
English progressive rock band founded in 1987 by in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. Originally a pseudonym for Wilson's solo recordings, in 1993 the project mutated into a full band with the inclusion of Colin Edwin, Chris Maitland and Richard Barbieri. Maitland was replaced by Gavin Harrison in 2002 and the line-up remained the same until 2010, when the band went into hiatus.
In November 2021 the band officially return as a three-piece lineup comprised of Wilson, Barbieri and Harrison, releasing the new single "Harridan". The band's eleventh studio album Closure / Continuation, their first in 13 years, is released in June 2022.
