Pretenders are an English-American rock band formed in Hereford, England, in March 1978, emerging from the British post punk movement. This always sounds like the most heartbreaking song to my ears - and with good reason. The band's guitarist, James Honeyman Scott (one of her closest friends) had died from a drug overdose 2 days before they recorded this. And Chrissie was 3 months pregnant and in the process of being dumped by the baby's father, Ray Davies. All this anguish permeates her performance of a great song about memory and loss.
