Pure Prairie League - Pure Prairie League

Review by Hwan EunYoung

Pure Prairie League's self-titled album, also known as "Bustin' Out," is a masterpiece of country rock music. Released in 1972, it features some of the band's most iconic songs, including "Amie" and "Falling In And Out Of Love."

The album's opener, "Tears," sets the tone with its melodic guitar riffs and emotive lyrics. "Take It Before You Go" is a standout track, with its catchy chorus and upbeat tempo. "Amie," the band's biggest hit, showcases Craig Fuller's soulful vocals and the band's impeccable harmonies.

The album's production is clean and crisp, allowing each instrument to shine. The guitar work is particularly impressive, with inventive solos and intricate fingerpicking. The rhythm section is tight and groovy, providing a solid foundation for the songs.

A complete bust upon release in '72 (that year again!) - and never truly revisited once PPL hit the big time three years later, the eponymous debut by the by then well-oiled bar band is a stunning, genre defining slice of country rock. Each track shimmers with fantastic vibes, delightfully evocative lyrics and delivery, outrageously soaring multi-part harmonies, beautiful guitar and pedal steel flourishes and solos and a coherence that few albums of the time achieved. If you are an aficionado of Americana and 70s rock you will know (or want to know) this album. Tremendous.

Back in the mid 70s a guy I worked with was offered extra money from the boss to paint the office we both worked in over the course of a couple of weekends. He asked me to help him and, as painting is a boring job he brought in this big tape deck to play cassettes on. One of them was this PPL album. I had never heard of them until then but have been a huge fan ever since. Love them!!..?

Walkman headphones on. Listening to a cassette of this album. On the school bus. Ignoring the toxic preppy kids. A lone wolf at 17. A lone wolf today.

Non country fan here, 24-VI-19, looking for respite from the other genres. IMHO this is how country should be -don't follow current scene- and the two longer numbers are outsanding, expecially Country Song.
