REM - Cant Get There From Here

jalterman09

Review by Jake Alterman

The album "Can't Get There From Here" by REM was released in 1985 and received mixed reviews from music critics. The album consists of 11 tracks, including the popular songs "Driver 8" and "Can't Get There From Here."

The album showcases the band's signature sound of jangly guitars, melodic hooks, and Michael Stipe's distinctive vocals. The lyrics touch on themes of love, loss, and social issues, with Stipe's cryptic and poetic lyrics leaving plenty of room for interpretation.

While some critics praised the album's catchy melodies and Stipe's unique voice, others found it to be too derivative of the band's previous work. The album's production was also criticized for being too polished, with some critics feeling that it lacked the raw energy of the band's earlier recordings.

Top 40 REM in the late 80's-early 90's was pretty good, but does not hold a candle to this era of REM.

I first heard this song in 1985 on a "classic rock" station, and was surprised it was then-current, at a time when the likes of Prince and Madonna were dominating the charts. This was more to my liking.

The first time I heard of R.E.M was when they played on the David Letterman show in around 1982? They played Radio Free Europe and Dave was so impressed that he invited them to sit down and have a conversation
In spite of the already popular B-52s, Michael Stipe described Athens, Georgia as the home of Herschel Walker. Oh, have times changed

I was always disappointed they did not include a scene with the house in Philomath that had trees for front porch columns, the Bryan-Wolfe House. That quirky house was always a highlight on my rides to & from Athens.

The entire Fables of the Reconstruction album was all killer no filler. Every song was excellent. I think it's their best and Reckoning their second best

Never heard a song that sucked so bad but was also so good. Such boomerish/cringe/cheesy/corny jazz add-ons and incoherent/meaningless lyrics and video that was so common in the 80s; yet still having a simple chord progression that makes it catchy.
