Rotary Connection - The Rotary Connection

Review by Hélène Scherrer

The Rotary Connection's self-titled album is a unique blend of psychedelic rock and soul music that captivates listeners with its experimental sound. The band, lead by vocalist Minnie Riperton, pushes the boundaries of traditional music and creates a completely original and distinct sound.

The album features a range of tracks that showcase the band's diverse musical influences, from the funky "I Am the Black Gold of the Sun" to the haunting "Memory Band". The use of unconventional instruments, such as the sitar and harp, add to the album's otherworldly sound.

Riperton's soulful vocals are a highlight of the album, bringing a raw emotion to each track. The album also features guest appearances from artists such as Charles Stepney and Phil Upchurch, adding to the eclectic nature of the music.

College 1968. Someone rushes into my dorm room and says I have to listen to this record. I say ok. they leave as I put it on the turntable. Silence. Then the sitar. Then the song kicks in. And there I go on a lifelong trip with Rotary Connection. I have been mesmerized by the unique sounds to no end........fantastic.

I remember my older sister playing this album,on her hifi..she always kept her bedroom door shut, but you you could smell the incense wafting out of her room..I had to be about eleven at the time..took me a few years to figure out what she was really burning in her room...My dad didn't know what to do with her..ha ha...yea, she was a wild one..but you you know what?..She grew up to be the most conservative of usfour kids...go figure

Minnie Riperton was so...intense and wonderful. Her daughter, Maya Rudolph, can sing really well, too.

If she had lived, we would have so much more of this beauty but I guess it's better to be grateful that we have what we have.
