Review by Thiago Joe

The album "Four Legends" by Sibelius Eugene Ormandy The Philadelphia Orchestra is a masterpiece of classical music. The album features four legendary compositions by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, performed by the renowned conductor Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra. The album opens with the majestic "Finlandia," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The orchestra's performance is powerful and precise, capturing the grandeur and passion of the music.

The second track, "The Swan of Tuonela," is a hauntingly beautiful piece that showcases the orchestra's ability to convey emotion through music. The solo English horn is particularly noteworthy, as it weaves a mournful melody throughout the piece. The third track, "Valse Triste," is a waltz that is both melancholic and lively. The orchestra's performance is elegant and nuanced, capturing the subtle shifts in mood throughout the piece.

The Lemmimkainen Legends, I suppose, are about the most popular music in the world; as we have the "Swan of Tuonela" with over 125 recordings, more than any other piece; the first movement is one of the most beautiful and inspiring, the fourth movement is one of the most exciting when played at a quick tempo. I prefer the recordings done by Finnish and Swedish orchestras with Finnish conductors, as they seem to know more of the spirit Sibelius intended for this awesome work. I have many LPs with Ormandy covering the spectrum of classical music. He was a giant and we all owe him gratitude for his energy and artistry. I purchased my first Ormandy recording when I was 18.

Fabulous music by a rare genius. Great performance. (That the Philadelphia Orchestra went bankrupt is yet another symptom of the disintegration of this country by a thousand cuts.)

Sibelius's 4 legends are not from "a Kalevala Suite" to my knowledge, but some of their music was from his unfinished opera, particularly The Swan. His Kalevala Symphony is a stand-a-lone choral work that became available for public performance in the 1970s after Sibelius had suppressed its performance, in its entirety, for most of his life.

Thank you. I owned this original recording on LP and cassette, played them hundreds of times and lost them both. Still always "the Best"!

Thanks so much for this upload. I used to own this l.p. many years ago and it's great to hear it again and to confirm my opinion that Ormandy's performance is still the best on record.
