British rock/pop group, formed in Liverpool, England during the late 1950s. Signed a recording contract with EMI in 1962. The lineup (1962-70) comprised John Lennon (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboards), Paul McCartney (vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards, percussion), George Harrison (guitar, vocals, sitar), and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals, percussion). In 1961, Stuart Sutcliffe (bass) and Pete Best (drums) were also members. Following an initial period as a straightforward Mersey-beat group, later recordings saw them experiment with psychedelia, incorporating innovative production techniques involving tape loops and other effects. Despite the group splitting in 1970, their record company has continued to release special products. Inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 (Group). By 2015, all four members were inducted also as individual solo artists.

Honestly I'm really glad they were turned down because that meant that they met George Martin and began recording in Abbey Road, not to mention they were probably humbled and worked twice as hard to be the greatest musical act to ever exist.

Pete plays the same best in every song; it’s clear he didn’t have much versatility

I can't tell time....I am learning, but pace/tempo/time I dunno.....but all I hear is ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ...no fills, no leading/driving....drummer is the foundation to the rest of the sound. This one followed too much.

Never heard The Beatles sound this bad. So many things working against them, first and foremost being Pete Best's low-energy, no-tempo-having drumming. No fills, rarely even a crash cymbal, barely tapping his drum set so there is no resonance in the drums, and generally playing like he's a freaking corpse. It doesn't help that Paul was clearly nervous and overdoing it (what is even going on in "I'm Sure to Fall in Love With You" lol), John was totally blown out on "Money" (I would have just omitted it if that was the best I could do, the big voice cracks are just cringe). The lack of audible bass is a huge loss (but then, the engineer later said Paul, who was pretty new to bass at the time, was the one hitting the most "bum notes"). And so many covers, when they were such gifted songwriters.

But those drums... It was just never going to happen if Pete had stuck around. "Money" should be absolutely exploding and it barely sounds like a drummer is even playing. The fact that just 9 months later they recorded "Love Me Do" and one year later recorded Please Please Me tells you a lot. Sorry Pete, you just weren't the one to take them to the next step.

Aw, Paul on Till There Was You is so sweet! To think that on 1 Jan. 1962, David Jones was almost 15 and at Bromley Tech in Kent, Barry Gibb was 15, Maurice and Robin Gibb were 12, and all 3 were about to drop out of school to work as full-time musicians in Australia, and James Hendrix was 19, and still in the US Army, but would be discharged by July...

George was truly the MVP of this audition. He was only 18 years old and could sing beautifully. His guitar work as well shows. John seemed a bit nervous, you can kinda hear the shaking in his voice. Paul in my honest opinion didn’t preform well at Decca. Didn’t enjoy his vocals on September in the Rain, Searchin’ and Sure To Fall. I feel like Paul was trying hard to sound american but failed ? He would obviously get better at his american voice three years later doing Drive My Car. However, Loved Of The Loved is my favorite and Paul’s voice was perfect for that song. And finally, Pete Best obviously proved why Ringo replaced him. ?

There is absolutely No urgency in Pete's drumming. Taking Ringo on Board was the best choice they ever made.

It’s so funny to hear the Beatles sing in the 1950s style.

The Beatles recorded 15 songs altogether for the session. The likely order was:

‘Till There Was You’
‘To Know Her Is To Love Her’
‘Take Good Care Of My Baby’
‘Hello Little Girl’
‘Crying, Waiting, Hoping’
‘Love Of The Loved’
‘Besame Mucho’
‘Searchin”
‘Money (That’s What I Want)’
‘The Sheik Of Araby’
‘Memphis, Tennessee’
‘Three Cool Cats’
‘Sure To Fall (In Love With You)’
‘September In The Rain’
‘Like Dreamers Do’

Three of the songs – ‘Like Dreamers Do’, ‘Hello Little Girl’, and ‘Love Of The Loved’ – were Lennon-McCartney originals. The entire session took roughly an hour from 11am, and the majority of songs were likely to have been recorded in a single take without overdubs.

at the time of the Decca recordings ,the Beatles were trying to find his own style , the were trying to rock jazz standars songs in to rocky voice, Paul took Elvis Presley as a vocal style, Decca didnt like , George Martin didnt like it, maybe he told him"sing more natural "pop" style. The Beatles were lucky to find in George Martins ,a person with a lot classical music background that poured so much musical arrangement for Beatles songs.and became super hits. and changed the way to produce pop music in 1964
