The Smiths - Heaven Knows Im Miserable Now

Review by Karen Hamilton-Fein

The album "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" by The Smiths is a classic masterpiece that showcases the band's signature sound and Morrissey's poignant lyrics. Released in 1984, the album features some of the band's most popular tracks, including "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now," "Girl Afraid," and "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want."

The album's sound is characterized by Johnny Marr's jangly guitar riffs and Morrissey's emotive vocals, which combine to create a uniquely melancholic and introspective atmosphere. The lyrics are introspective and sometimes self-deprecating, with Morrissey exploring themes of loneliness, alienation, and heartbreak.

Despite its somber themes, the album is a joy to listen to, with each track offering something new and compelling. From the upbeat "William, It Was Really Nothing" to the haunting "Suffer Little Children," the album is a well-crafted collection of songs that showcase The Smiths' unique sound and Morrissey's lyrical talent.

The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. The group consisted of vocalist Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce. Critics have called them one of the most important bands to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s. In 2002, the NME named the Smiths "the artist to have had the most influence on the NME". In 2003, all four of their albums appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". The band broke up in 1987 due to internal tensions and have turned down several offers to reunite.

I feel it's kind of odd for people without children to understand the full horror of loosing a child. They've really hit the nail on the head. I have adult children now. But before I had my own I didn't fully feel or understand the value and depth of love felt by a parent. I didn't have siblings either. When you become a parent you are suddenly thrown into a world of fear, that you must make sure they don't die before you, they become your reason for existence, how could you go on without them. Even still, maybe even more so now that they are adults, out there in the world, on their own, driving, going to work...never knowing if the ringing phone is going to tell you what you dread the most.
I don't live in irrational fear, just what is considered normal, what all parents have on the "back burner" of their minds.

The combination of a beautiful melody and the saddest subject is a intriguing combination whatever you make of it. It shows a different level to the smiths. Chip papers and all.

Love him or loathe him , Morrissey was a lyrical genius. I feel blessed to be of an age when The Smiths were at the top of their game , current , influential and producing powerful music that sticks with you for a lifetime.
Nothing like them before or since, although Johnny Marr has gone on to carve out his solo career very successfully. The Smiths were more than just Morrissey, but without him there would have been no Smiths.

CRUEL WIND

The cruelest wind does bite its worst,
on cold bleak Winter's nights.
Where a poor lost soul endures alone,
such an undeserving plight.

Two score and thirteen years have past ,
since Keith set out to play.
No one knew he'd meet the Devil,
as he went about his way.

He just never stood a chance at all,
pure evil proved too strong.
He would never see his Mam again,
she's sense something was wrong.

And for fifty years Winnie would cry,
herself to sleep each night.
She was beside herself with torment
that could never be put right.

She prayed that her wee boy's remains,
returned home form that place.
So that he be laid where he belonged,
with some dignity and grace.

Over time stress took its tragic toll,
and her heart just broke in two.
She would never hold her boy again,
that sweet sweet child she knew.

Keith's out there at that sacred spot,
the longest time's advanced.
His smiling face shan't be forgot,
Nor will it, not a chance!

Where cruelest wind does bite its worst,
on cold bleak Winter's nights.
One lonely soul endures alone,
such an undeserving plight.

My hope that they'll find young keith,
so that he can once again.
Be reunited with his loving Mam,
and right by her side be lain.

R I P Keith and Winnie.
James Bridgewood.
