Sparks - In Outer Space

Review by Roberto Costa

In Outer Space, the 1983 album by the American rock band Sparks, is a unique and experimental work that showcases the group's eclectic style and innovative approach to music. The album features a mix of electronic and rock sounds, with quirky lyrics and playful melodies that are both catchy and thought-provoking.

The album's opening track, "Cool Places," is a standout hit that features a duet with singer-songwriter Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Go's. The song's upbeat tempo and infectious chorus make it an instant classic, and it's a perfect example of the album's overall tone and style.

Other standout tracks on In Outer Space include "Popularity," a satirical take on the music industry, and "Lucky Me, Lucky You," a playful love song with a catchy melody and clever lyrics. The album also features several instrumental tracks, including "Dance Godammit," a funky dance tune with a driving beat and catchy synth lines.

Brothers Ron and Russell Mael from Los Angeles, USA have been making diverse music since 1969 under various incarnations of Sparks. In 1979 they ditched the guitars and keyboards of glam geek rock and started working with Italian producer Giorgio Moroder, beginning a love affair with electronic music. Since then they have worked with a variety of people including Finitribe, Les Rita Mitsouko, Erasure, Faith No More and Franz Ferdinand.

Review #2 Sparks - In Outer Space (1983) "In Outer Space" is the 12th studio album and most sold in there home country (The U.S). This is one of there best albums in the 80s with many things to love and hate. This one is one of there most "poppy" albums. The first thing I got to say is that Side A is absolutly fantastic. It features some of my favorite songs from the Sparks. With the lead single and opening "Cool Places" describes what the entire album will be. It's mostly a album with what I like to call "Help I'm a New Wave artist I need to go poppy for record sales to pay my debt of my ridiculous haircut." You know band like Duran Duran with 'danceable-like tracks and overproduction. But, the Sparks did amazing job with it not sounding overproduced and keeping there sound. besides "Cool Places" there is 2 songs with nice keyboards (Popularity and Please Baby Please) and another 2 songs with awesome chorus (All You Ever Think About Is... and Prayin' For The Party). The opening to Side B is disappointing after the amazing keyboard hooks in "Please Baby Please" there is the fine "Rockin Girl" besides the funny line of "And you're the only girl I ever met who hates "Hey Jude". But, the album comes back with the great song of "A Fun Bunch of Guys From..." being a very interesting song describing Aliens describing how great they are? I have no clue what this song is about but it's interesting.Overall this album is fantastic. There are problems like the "dancelike new wave" can get boring or just bland over a few tracks (I.e. the begging of Side B) or the production can ruin some of these songs. Plus some of the tracks need more of a beat to it like "Dance Godammit", even though a good song it needs more instruments in my opinion. Thankfully this album showed the Sparks can still be strong after 12 albums but what was is the next album like...? Overall rating: 8.3/10 (No pun here) Highlights: Cool Places, All You Think About Is... , Popularity
