Rolf Harris copied the song (loosely) "Tie me Kangaroo down sport" which became a big hit in Britain and Australia. I am positive he heard this Hobbs track somewhere along the line when he resided in Britain in the 50's. Love this track... "My donkey likes nylon..." ..priceless

Great to hear the real thing - the only other version I have ever heard was as a child in the 1960s listening to my mum's Nina and Frederik records. They were a couple of white Danish aristocrats who sang West Indian songs in phoney accents and strangely were very popular at the time!

"Cantata" is Rafael Hernandez's "Cachita" misspelled.
"Del Magreto del Batey" is "El Negrito del Batey" misspelled.

Years before stereo records appeared in 1958, the sound engineer Emory Cook created the Binaural record which had two bands per side, but they weren't two selections per side, but the channels in which the selections (or part of them) were recorded. The outer band was the left channel and the inner band was the right channel, so those records could be played only in a special turntable which had TWO tonearms and two needles, a very expensive and uncomfortable way to enjoy "the first stereo prototypes".

The album claims on the back that the lyrics are "You're on my mind baby," but in other versions (Harry Belafonte, for instance) it's clear that the lyrics are "Stay home and mind baby." I'm wondering if Cook was trying to conceal the fact that the song was about American soldiers impregenating local girls and leaving.

According to the Cook Record label this song was recorded in 1955 and not 1953.
Delightful early Steelband recording all the same.
