Great sound! I like it better than this stage version by The Creation. I can understand why the lady complained about the a...hole soap and s--t cans. I worked for NZBC at the time and they were quite conservative about what was broadcast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0YdOoLDkR4

A decent cover version of the classic tune by 'The Creation'. Eddie Phillips' bowed guitar (on the original) is sorely missed with this attempt to re-create the track.

2 x Gibson solid body 3 pickup SG guitars, 2 Jansen Amps, Jansen Bass Guitar, Jansen Bass Amp, Farfisa Organ with "home built" Leslie Speaker, I think Pearl Drums. Great use of the "fuzz" box (one off custom made). Right time but wrong country. Should have moved from NZ to UK in '66 but hindsight makes it easy to say. Really admired them. Shared a gig with them for some months at a small but always packed night spot in Auckland

Thanks for the upload! "Painter Man" was racing up the charts only to suffer an abrupt halt in position 6 when a concerned housewife complained of lecherous lyrics. The report in the newspaper read as follows :- "Lady goes pop over can as ... A hit parade number suddenly left the air on NZBC stations late last week. And its death had nothing to do with audience reaction. Overnight "Painter Man" recorded in Auckland by Larry's Rebels, went from number 6 on the pop parade to oblivion. It was snatched from the ladder and all air time after a vigilant lady complained that the lyrics were in bad taste. She objected to references to household soap and a tin can, and claimed that the ambiguous pronunciation turned "Painter Man" into a ribald record. Also referred to in the song are dirty postcards".  Such was the power of the listener in those days. http://www.sergent.com.au/music/larrysrebels.html

In a band biography there were a couple of suggestions that Brett Nielsen's drumming wasn't up to scratch. Listen to this one and other tracks of this line-up and I would say his drumming was pretty tight.

Absolute crying shame that this didn't get released in the States (even though the original version did, and even that version should've been a hit). I mean this might be the greatest garage rock song ever! It's got all the elements you love in garage rock and they're all done right. Snotty lead vocal, maracas, snaky Vox organ (Farfisa?), fuzzed out guitar tone with one of the catchiest riffs ever awash in echo, thumping bass and drums. It's got it all. Puts something like "Psychotic Reaction" to shame.
