"What was the word you've just said, Allentown? I'm offering you a chance to star in the biggest musical Broadway's seen in twenty years and you say: "Allentown?" -- ... Think of Musical Comedy, the most glorious words in the English language! -- Come on along and listen to The Lullaby of Broadway!" -- Jerry Orbach, 42nd Street

Jerry was born on October 20th, 1935, and the original off broadway production of The Fantasticks opened on May 3rd, 1960. So that means he was just 24 years old when he played El Gallo and when he first sang this song. Santino Fontana was the same age that Jerry was when he played Matt.

It’s super impressive to have such a mature voice like that for someone of his age.

The guy who played El Gallo revival was 46 years old when the off broadway by comparison.

i never heard his singing until he was much older... (he was the candle in disney's Beauty and the Beast)
you can hear the promise of what years of training gave him.
some people get reedy, watered down, as they age.
but he did not. he just got more robust and richer.
it's sad that i only Really knew his voice towards the end of his life/career. i wish i would have been on the journey of his performance earlier on. thankfully there are ways of going back and listening now. what an age we live in where even when we've lost somebody of such scope and talent, we are still able to get to know and appreciate them.

Hard to believe that Jerry Orbach left us back in 2004, now a long time ago. Missing you, Jerry, you were an amazing talent and seemed like a genuinely decent man too. RIP.

I just saw John O"Hurley - you know, Peterman from Seinfeld, in the current Off-Bway production. I saw it 35 years ago at the Sullivan St Theatre downtown - What a wonderful show and beautiful score - got a little misty-eyed when El Gallo sang this one today.
