Velvet Crush - In The Presence Of Greatness

Review by Nisha Lall

In The Presence Of Greatness by Velvet Crush is a power-pop masterpiece that showcases the band's melodic sensibilities and catchy hooks. The album, released in 1991, features a mix of jangly guitars, lush harmonies, and driving rhythms that recall the classic sound of '60s and '70s rock.

From the opening track "Hold Me Up" to the closing ballad "The Connection", the album is filled with memorable tunes that are sure to get stuck in your head. Standout tracks include the upbeat "Time Wraps Around You", the wistful "Window to the World", and the anthemic "Drive Me Down".

One of the strengths of In The Presence Of Greatness is the interplay between the two lead singers, Paul Chastain and Ric Menck, whose voices blend together perfectly. The production, handled by Mitch Easter, is also top-notch, giving the songs a crisp and polished sound that never feels overproduced.

  • Liner Notes on back cover:
  • 'In The Presence Of Greatness' was recorded in his house in Princeton, New Jersey. Matthew Used his home studio to make demos, but we thought it would be a great place to make a record. The sounds we got, which happened quite naturally without any thought to microphone placement, were brittle and in your face. This is what we wanted our album to sound like.
  • Paul, Jeffrey and I worked out the songs together at our rehearsal space in Providence, Rhode Island. Someone would come in with the germ of an idea and we'd figure out the arrangement together. When we came up with at least three or four decent tunes, we'd hop in the van and drive to Matthew's. Once there, we'd set up in the living room facing one another, and it it usually took two or three takes to capture a performance. Matthew overdubbed his lead guitar bits later. In all, we recorded the entire record in three quick weekend sessions.
  • When Velvet Crush formed we were inspired by 60's groups like The Kinks, The Who, and Small Faces. We also loved bands from the 80's like Orange Juice, Primal Scream, and My Bloody Valentine. The group we adored the most was Teenage Fanclub, who came on the scene in Scotland at about the same time as we did in America. In fact, we loved them so much we spontaneously recorded a version of 'Everything Flows', which was eventually used as the b-side for a single.
  • We called our album 'In The Presence Of Greatness' because we hoped to one day stand in the presence of our idols. Some people misread it as being boastful, which it never was intended to be, although we knew the record was good when we finished it.
  • One of the earliest champions in the U.K. was Dave Barker, who released a single by us on the Seminal Twang single label, and who wanted to release our album on his Paperhouse label. Somehow Alan McGee heard it, scooped barker, and it came out on Creation instead. Eventually we signed a full-fledged deal with Creation, one of only a handful of American bands to achieve the honor.
  • To promote the album we did a month long tour of Great Britain with Teenage Fanclub, who had just released 'Bandwagonesque'. Back in the U.S. we built our reputation by touring constantly, and we toured in Japan and Spain on numerous occasions.
  • And now 'In The Presence Of Greatness' is reissued on Dave Barker's Glass Modern label, so the circle is complete.
