Vera Sola - The Colony Dont Say

Review by Janlou Chaput

Vera Sola's latest album, The Colony Don't Say, is a haunting and poetic masterpiece. The singer-songwriter's unique voice, paired with her stripped-down instrumentation, creates a raw and intimate atmosphere that pulls the listener in from the very first track. The album is a journey through themes of love, loss, and self-discovery, with Sola's lyrics painting vivid pictures of the human experience. The standout track, "The Colony," is a powerful commentary on the current state of society, with Sola's voice soaring over a sparse, yet impactful, instrumental backdrop. The Colony Don't Say is a stunning achievement for Vera Sola, showcasing her talent as both a songwriter and performer. It is a must-listen for fans of indie-folk and anyone looking for an emotional and thought-provoking musical experience.

There's a lot I like in this. Even who the narrator is is a mystery, along with why they're doing it. It's a lot of "I" did this. Who's it all _for_ one wonders? The last, repeated line encapsulates the theme. For me, it makes me think of things that have plagued since childhood.
Why do we build cities where we can't produce what we need to live, then enslave people to produce it for us? What was the point of making it easier for humans to populate, then resent them for existing, as those in decision-making power seem to do?
& yeah, it all _does_ feel like blind scrabbling with made-up causes.
It's hard to keep one's sights on the message without being drawn into it so closely one gets wrapped up in it, but you definitely did it just with the lyrics here. The visual juxtaposition with all that man-made tech ramming itself through nature blindly adds to it too.
I'm surprised more comments aren't about anything. "I love your art" doesn't tell us why. Still, really glad I answered the call of curiosity. Time to listen to some more.

she has a very 50s voice, in my opinion. Not exactly my style, but it's alright.
