The Woody Herman Herd - Road Band

Review by Logan

The Woody Herman Herd's album "Road Band" is a classic jazz masterpiece that showcases the band's impressive musical talents. The album features a mix of original compositions and covers that blend together seamlessly to create a cohesive and enjoyable listening experience.

The album opens with the upbeat and energetic "The Good Earth," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The band's tight and precise playing is evident throughout the album, especially on tracks like "Blue Flame" and "Prelude Ala Cha Cha."

One of the standout tracks on the album is "The Goof and I," which features some incredibly tight horn arrangements and a catchy melody. The band's rhythm section also shines on this track, providing a solid foundation for the rest of the band to build upon.

About The Woody Herman Herd

American jazz orchestra and big band. From the 1940's, the expression 'The Herd' was used in variable context, which was always a synonym for Woody Herman's orchestra. inherited the in New York City in 1936. The history of the following band evolution can be structured in the following way: 1936 - 1944: In 1944, the term 'The Herd' was first established. Woody Herman took this term for his purposes and started first to number the herds, later the herds got more special names. The following time table gives an overview over the living periods of the herds. The respective herd was always used as an ANV to the 'Woody Herman Orchestra' in the specified time range. All members of the herds were also member of the Woody Herman orchestra. 1944 - 1946: 1947 - Nov 1949: Apr 1950 - June 1955: Nov 1955 - Dec 1955: / Dec 1955 - March 1959: , until May 1956 aka Dec 1958 - Feb 1959: April 1959: Oct 1959: June 1959 - Aug 1967: Further bands were defined by recording: 1967 - 1981: (coexistence) 1973 - 1979: (coexistence) 1977: (coexistence) 1978: (coexistence) 1977 - 1987 (coexistence) Post mortem: 1987ff: Besides this rough timeline, there were several spin-offs and reincarnations of other bands and herds, which do make the timeline in fact more complicated. For example: (primarily circa 1959) {;}American jazz ensemble, active from 1950 until June 1955. In April 1950, after dissolving due to internal problems (e.g., some of the members were addicted to drugs), founded his Third Herd, keeping the "Four Brothers Sound" with four saxophonists. The group was active until Woody Herman disbanded it at the end of June 1955 in order to form / . On New Year's Eve 1955, these ensembles were succeeded by , which was sometimes also called "The New Third Herd."
