Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds

Review by Franjo Pehar

Eastern Sounds is an album that showcases the unique talents of Yusef Lateef, a multi-instrumentalist known for his ability to blend Eastern and Western musical traditions. Released in 1961, the album features Lateef on various wind instruments, including the tenor saxophone, flute, and oboe, as well as Middle Eastern and African instruments like the arghul and koto.

The album's opening track, "The Plum Blossom," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its haunting melody and intricate rhythms. Throughout the album, Lateef seamlessly weaves together elements of jazz, blues, and traditional Middle Eastern and African music, creating a sound that is both exotic and accessible.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Blues for the Orient," which features Lateef on the tenor saxophone and is driven by a funky bassline and infectious drumbeat. Another highlight is "Ching Miau," a beautiful ballad that showcases Lateef's mastery of the flute.

American jazz musician, artist, composer, and producer. Born: 9 October 1920 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA. Died: 23 December 2013 in Amherst, Massachusetts, USA (aged 93). Lateef was a jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer and prominent figure among the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in America, following his conversion to Islam in 1950. Although Lateef's main instruments were the tenor saxophone and flute, he also played oboe and bassoon, both rare in jazz, and also used a number of non-western instruments such as the bamboo flute, shanai, shofar, xun, arghul and koto. Lateef had an inquisitive spirit and was never just a bop or hard bop soloist. He did not care much for the term "jazz

Maestro de maestros!!! Yusef Lateef, you did not have the widespread fame you deserved... but it is probably not what you coveted. You had the respect and veneration of your peers. And those who know your music, I think it's fair to say, love and treasure it.
