Abdullah Ibrahim - Ekaya

heathershelpers

Review by Heather

Abdullah Ibrahim's album Ekaya is a masterpiece of jazz music. This album is a perfect blend of African rhythms and American jazz, creating a unique and captivating sound that is truly one of a kind. The album features some of the most talented musicians in the industry, including Carlos Ward on alto saxophone, Ricky Ford on tenor saxophone, and John Stubblefield on soprano saxophone.

From the opening track, "Joan Capetown Flower," the listener is transported to a world of vibrant rhythms and melodies. Each track on the album showcases Ibrahim's exceptional talent as a composer and pianist, with a range of styles, from the upbeat and energetic "Mandela" to the more reflective and contemplative "The Mountain."

The album's title, Ekaya, means home in Xhosa, a language spoken in South Africa. This title is fitting, as the album feels like a warm and welcoming homecoming, with Ibrahim's music serving as a bridge between his South African roots and his love for American jazz.

About Abdullah Ibrahim

Legendary South African jazz musician (mostly piano and saxophone), born as Adolph Johannes Brand in Cape Town in 1934. He was given the "Dollar" nickname due his regular purchases of jazz LPs from US-American soldiers as a youth, and when he converted to Islam in 1968 he changed his name to Abdullah Ibrahim -- although he continued to perform and record under the monicker for some years thereafter. His "Mannenberg" composition from 1974 is widely considered to be a seminal piece of South African heritage and, at times, been dubbed an unofficial South African anthem. In 2009 Mr. Ibrahim was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Bob Bryan's review is right on. A beautifully recorded record of compelling compositions revealing Ibrahim's ethnic influences. Stellar playing by all on board. Just put a turntable back into my system and played this LP for the first time in years. Sounded terrific. This is the only Ibrahim recording I own- that won't be the case for long.

Been loving this record for a long time. I heard Mr Ibrahim play at Carnegie Recital Hall in NYC around the time this came out. Wonderful.
