Review by Sky Jian

The African Jazz Pioneers' self-titled album is a vibrant and eclectic collection of jazz music that captures the essence of South African culture. The album features a diverse range of instruments, including brass, percussion, and vocals, which are expertly woven together to create a rich and immersive sound.

The band's musical prowess is evident throughout the album, with each track showcasing their technical proficiency and musical ingenuity. From the upbeat rhythms of "Jive Township" to the mellow melody of "Sophiatown Is Gone," the African Jazz Pioneers effortlessly blend traditional African rhythms with contemporary jazz styles.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Sgaxa Mabhande," a lively and infectious tune that features a call-and-response vocal section and a driving beat that will have listeners tapping their feet in no time. Another highlight is "Amaqhawe," a hauntingly beautiful ballad that showcases the band's emotional range and musical sensitivity.

"your love is burning like a hellfire"... reminds me of such greats of back in the day like Pat Matshikiza, The Movers, Rex Rabanye, Elite Swingsters, Abdullar "Dollar Brand" Ibrahim et al. The 80s and 90s were good times indeed

Wow, what a music...brilliant stuff. I'm glad that I was associated with this music in the 1990s in Dorkay House, Eloff Street, Jo'burg. The late Bra Ntemi Piliso was the top composer, arranger and orchestrator of this music. African Jazz Pioneers represented South Africa in many festivals in America, Europe etc. The youths of today don't know this music, they are busy with meaningless styles of music called "Bubble Gum
