Review by Kikko Freitas

Symphonie No 9 by Anton Bruckner, performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker under the baton of Carlo Maria Giulini, is a stunning example of the composer's late style. The music is characterized by its grandeur, its complexity, and its spiritual intensity. The orchestra, led by Giulini, delivers an impassioned and nuanced performance, bringing out the full range of emotions and textures in the music.

The symphony is divided into four movements, each of which showcases Bruckner's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create powerful musical climaxes. The first movement, marked Andante comodo, begins with a somber and introspective theme that gradually builds in intensity before reaching a majestic climax. The second movement, marked Scherzo, is a lively and energetic dance, full of intricate rhythms and playful melodies. The third movement, marked Adagio, is the emotional heart of the symphony, a deeply moving meditation on death and transcendence. Finally, the fourth movement, marked Finale, is a triumphant and exultant celebration of life, full of soaring melodies and thundering brass.

Throughout the symphony, the Wiener Philharmoniker plays with precision and passion, bringing out the subtle nuances and complex harmonies of Bruckner's music. Giulini's conducting is masterful, balancing the various sections of the orchestra and shaping the music with a keen sense of drama and emotion.

Austrian organist and composer, born September 4, 1824, in Ansfelden, died October 11, 1896, in Vienna. In 1855 he began to seriously study music in Vienna and graduated in 1861 at the age of 37. It was only at 40 that he began to devote himself seriously to composition. since 1868 he has taught organ and counterpoint at the conservatory of Wien, meanwhile, he makes himself known as an organ concert player. His work was initially appreciated only by a small circle of admirers, only after his death, his great symphonic-choral compositions began to find acclaim and enthusiastic admirers in Europe and around the world. Josef Anton Bruckner best known for his symphonies, masses, Te Deum and motets. His symphonies are considered emblematic of the final stage of Austro-German Romanticism because of their rich harmonic language, strongly polyphonic character, and considerable length. Bruckner's compositions helped to define contemporary musical radicalism, owing to their dissonances, unprepared modulations, and roving harmonies.
