I love the callback to Child Is The Father to the Man in 1:24 and onwards.

What a tragedy of a life--of a potentially superb musician. You never just "get over" being beaten and terrorized by your own father throughout your childhood--if it stays unresolved, the trauma is always there to prevent you from experiencing the satisfaction of real intimacy without the terror that blocked it off originally. It's amazing that those brothers accomplished as much as they did, and that Brian survived with "only" schizophrenia... The fact that Dennis became so involved with Charles Manson says it all. At least he had enough conscience to separate himself from the Manson Family before they went on their murder rampage; but the trauma never left him, it only attracted more.

The truth is this song came from a longer song poem I wrote that had many more lyrics.Dennis picked the one he liked and instantly composed music to it.
He asked me to change one word we needed up leaving that section out of it.On occasion when I recite it I add some of the sections .The bridge is Brians melody There are more verses that never had music put to them.This happened on other songs too .. The melody was all Dennis and Brian the bridge: It was as if we were one we did not even ask those questions it was a collaboration On most of my compositions I write the poem or lyric first and someone else writes the melody
on occasion I will write some of a melody I usually do not get credit separately we did not work that way .Many other writers wrote off the Dennis tracks I did not do it that way in the sixties I was a spoken word performer blessings and love .Some of the words were like prayer blessings as if they were inspired in me

I’ll never forget the day I first heard this song… slow day at the breakfast joint i worked at, went home and decided to pop on some Beach Boys.
Critically underrated track, every time I take a listen I’m met with such warmth. Not a feeling you get from most newer music nowadays, but that just may be the nostalgia speaking!

I listened to this album and Wild Honey when I was a preteen in the late 1960s. My friends didn't get this kind of Beach Boys music. Knowing now how appreciated God Only Knows is as a song, it makes you appreciate the subtlety of this vocal performance. Wonderful.

This is a hidden masterpiece I hate that a lot of the Beachboys songs are never mentioned a lot when a bunch of them are great
