Blanck Mass - The Rat

Review by Chiara F.

The Rat, the latest album by Blanck Mass, is a sonic journey through a dystopian world. The album is a dark and brooding exploration of the human condition, filled with haunting soundscapes and intense beats.

Blanck Mass, the solo project of Benjamin John Power, has always been known for its experimental sound and The Rat is no different. The album features a range of electronic sounds, from distorted synths to pounding drums, all layered together to create a sense of unease.

The opening track, "John Doe's Carnival of Error," sets the tone for the album with its eerie, distorted soundscape. The album then moves into "No Dice," a track with a heavy beat and a sense of urgency that builds throughout the song.

The standout track on the album is "House vs. House," a track that features a driving beat and a sense of tension that never lets up. The track is a perfect example of the album's overall sound and tone.

About Blanck Mass

Blanck Mass is the solo project of ' Benjamin John Power, who began making music under that name in 2010. The project's 2011 self-titled debut, which he recorded in his apartment, featured ambient, droning electronic music that managed to be more abstract, yet often more accessible, than his work with Fuck Buttons. "Sundowner," a track from the album, was used during the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony, along with "Olympians" from Fuck Buttons' album Tarot Sport. That year, the White Math/Polymorph single arrived via Software Recording Co. For the second Blanck Mass album, Power wrote and recorded songs in Fuck Buttons' Space Mountain studio as well as his home in Edinburgh; inspired by "the flaws of the human form in its current evolutionary state," Dumb Flesh arrived in 2015.
