Buddy Defranco is one of the greatest clarinetists players who incorporated bebop style into his music. Pete Fountain once referred to him as a unsung legend. Love this track

Il y a quelques semaines on apprenait le deces en Floride de Buddy DeFranco a un age honorable (91 ans). C'etait un excellent clarinettiste oscillant du mainstream au bop avec un beau son boise.Il joue sur cet album avec un quintet tres bien en place comprenant l'excellent Tal Farlow a la guitare, le contrebassiste George Duvivier (combien d'albums au compteur ? Plus de 1000 ?), le pianiste anglais installe aux USA, Derek Smith et Ronnie Bedford a la batterie. Quelques standards comme le splendide < Like someone in Love > qui ouvre fort bien l'album.Trois compositions de Buddy au programme : le tres melancolique < Melancholy Stockholm >, qui porte fort bien son nom ; Lle chaloupe < Playa del Sol > nous entraine peut-etre en Floride et le dernier morceau.Deux pieces de G. et I. Gershwin dont < I"love you, Porgy?> romantique a souhait. On se met a rever, mais un < Swinging the indian > a plein galop nous tire de notre torpeur. J'ai une legere preference pour leur interpretation des ballades (plus nombreuses sur l'album) a celle des morceaux plus enleves, quoique la fin n'est pas mal du tout.Dans l'ensemble un moment fort agreable, avec un clarinettiste de talent. Enregistre en mars 1989, a New York, sur un petit label louisianais.
