The Quintet The Trio Massey Hall Toronto 15th May 1953 is a classic jazz album that showcases the talents of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. The album was recorded live at Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada, on May 15th, 1953, and captures the energy and brilliance of these jazz legends at the height of their powers.

The album features a mix of standards and original compositions, including Parker's "Salt Peanuts," Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia," and Powell's "All the Things You Are." Mingus and Roach provide a solid rhythm section that keeps the music swinging throughout the set.

The musicianship on display is truly remarkable, with each member of the quintet contributing their own unique sound to the mix. Parker's saxophone playing is as fluid and inventive as ever, while Gillespie's trumpet adds a bright, soaring quality to the music. Powell's piano playing is full of complex chord progressions and dazzling runs, while Mingus and Roach provide a rock-solid foundation for the group.

American alto saxophonist, composer and bebop pioneer (b. August 29, 1920, Kansas City - d. March 12, 1955, New York City, aged 34). Widely considered to be one of the most influential of jazz saxophonists, jazz musicians, and indeed musicians in general. Also known as 'Bird' (a shortening of 'Yardbird', Parker acquired the nickname early in his career with many contradictory stories regarding the name's origin). Parker was an extremely fast virtuoso and introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas into jazz, including rapid passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. Parker died on March 12, 1955 in the age of only 34 in the suite of his friend and patron Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter at the Stanhope Hotel in New York City. The official causes of death were lobar pneumonia and a bleeding ulcer, but Parker also had an advanced case of cirrhosis and had suffered a heart attack. The coroner who performed his autopsy mistakenly estimated Parker's 34-year-old body to be between 50 and 60 years of age.

What a marvellous concert! Dizzy Gillespie was on fire, Charlie Parker probably shone less because he had pawned his Selmer ans was playing with a plastic(?) alto. What a line-up, basically a be-bop dream team with rhythm section comprising Bud Powell piano, Charles Mingus bass, Max Roach drums.
Yet only some 600 were in the audience. Apparently the organizer was so confident that through word-of-mouth of a sell-out crowd because of the stellar line-up that he did not bother to advertise.

I found this LP album in a second-hand bin. In fairly poor condition but I bought it for the novelty of Charlie Chan on alto; Chan was a fiction Chinese detective on tv. I had no idea then that Charlie Chan is the pseudonym for Parker so that he would not fall foul with his Verve contract.
Years later I bought the CD, and this included material played by the rhythm trio.
66 years ago this concert. Still so fresh. Thank you Nikolai and Youtube.

Bird's finest work. If the solo on Perdido was up here I'd list that too.
