About Dave 'Baby' Cortez
American pop and R&B pianist and organist, born on August 13, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan. Cousin of .
Clowney made his first record in 1956 under his own name but it was not until three years later that he scored a major success using the stage name Dave "Baby" Cortez. His instrumental, "The Happy Organ" was the first pop/rock hit to feature the organ as lead instrument with Gary Hammond as drummer. The 45rpm single went to no. 1 on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 charts. Cortez had another Top Ten hit in 1962 with "Rinky Dink".

I just realized that the melody is based on "Shortenin' Bread."

This song is a standut childhood memory for me! This song was on an 8-track oldies collection that my Dad played in our van, and he had the LP (vinyl) version as well. :) I've always loved this song!
I was born in 1968 -- the music of the 80s was that of my teen years, but by then, I'd had a solid upbringing of all kinds of oldies.
I'm glad and grateful that I was raised with music and an understanding of the world before I was born. I truly wonder how many of today's kids have that!

What a great record to bust out some epic dance moves. This is why I love old music. The old stuff is better than the modern day garbage. Rock and roll records from the 1950s were the best.

This song was the first instrumental to get to number one in the Billboard hot 100. I think it’s strange that nobody seems to know how he got the nickname “baby”. Was it his baby face, or was he the youngest in his family?

I haven't heard this for decades, yet I saw the name, and the tune started playing in my head.

I was born in 58 my best friends dad had a sub shop in Baltimore and in it was a juke box. He brought all the 45 home after they left the top 40. We listened to this one the most.

Number One for a week in May, 1959. Not quite old enough to remember it when it was new but I've loved this '50s classic since I was a kid. In 1962 Dave returned to the Top 10 with "Rinky Dink" another hot instrumental.
