Disgrace - Turku

Review by Sara McGoodwin

Disgrace's latest album, Turku, is a true masterpiece of extreme metal. The band has been around for over a decade, and their experience shows in the tight musicianship and well-crafted songs on this record. From the opening track, "Cursed and Hated," to the epic closer, "The End of Everything," Turku delivers a relentless assault of crushing riffs, pummeling drums, and guttural vocals.

What sets Disgrace apart from other bands in the genre is their ability to inject melody and atmosphere into their songs without sacrificing any of the aggression. Tracks like "The Worm" and "The Flame" showcase the band's knack for crafting memorable hooks and haunting atmospheres, while still delivering plenty of heavy moments.

The production on Turku is top-notch, with every instrument and element in the mix given ample space and clarity. The guitar tones are particularly impressive, with a thick, chunky sound that cuts through the mix without overpowering the other instruments.

Since 1998's If You're Looking for Trouble, the band changed genre, opting for a higher-tuned Post-Hardcore in the vein of Corrosion of Conformity: the style continues on 2002's Turku, but the music remains cacophonic, poorly-prodcued and shouted.
