Pete Rock's "PeteStrumentals" is a classic instrumental hip-hop album that showcases the legendary producer's signature sound. Released in 2001, the album is a collection of beats that were created by Rock between 1990 and 1995, and it features some of his finest work.
From the opening track "A Little Soul" to the closing track "It's About That Time," Pete Rock's production skills are on full display. The beats are soulful, jazzy, and funky, and they showcase Rock's ability to sample from a wide range of genres. The album is also notable for its use of live instrumentation, with Rock playing drums, bass, and keyboards on many of the tracks.

There's really not much to say about any instrumental album, in my opinion, so I'll keep this brief: Pete Rock is deservedly a legend, and while this doesn't quite live up to his legacy, it's still pretty solid. I do wish there was more variety across the album in tempo and mood, the tracks go on a bit long considering how little they modulate, and there are a couple of weaker tracks. But Pete's atmospheric sensibilities make for a relaxing, pleasant listen, and if you're looking for beats to freestyle over, this is the place for you. Most of the guest verses unfortunately don't impress, with two exceptions: both of Roc Marciano's verses on the U.N. joints are pretty good, and completely steal the show, and Nature delivers probably the best rapping I've ever seen him do on To My Advantage, the easy highlight of the album. There are instrumental albums that do more to push the envelope in terms of what hip-hop production can do, but as something to just relax to or freestyle over, you can't do much better than one of the greatest producers of all time.
